5 Forgotten Essentials for College Life

Hey guys, it’s Jordyn!

Chances are, you’ve already been making a packing list and reading all about dorm life for college, and that’s great! Deciding what all to bring with you to college is a big deal, especially when you need to pack light!

The essentials like clothes, hangers, wall art, and school supplies come to mind easily, but the unexpected can (& will) happen, so you’ve got to be prepared!

You may be anxious to leave “the nest” and start college life without your parents… but you’ll soon find you’re handling things that they might have had duty over, and now it’s up to you!

Here are five essential items that I think are most easily forgotten about when making the transition to college.

  1. Ice scraper.  You may be thinking, “Uh, why would I need that in Mississippi?” Which I somewhat agree with.. but there are special occasions when it does sleet or snow down south and you’ll  need to get the ice off of your windshield somehow!  This past week MC even had a SNOW DAY! (It was a big deal.)

2.  Jumper cables. I know, not what shoots to the top of your packing list for college… but they’ll come in handy when you or a friend are in need!  If you’re unsure how to use them, just call MC security and those sweet men and women will help you!

3.  Toolbox.  This comes in handy especially when you are trying to hang any wall art or moving any furniture around.  Who doesn’t randomly need a wrench or hammer at some point in their college life?

4.  Broom/dustpan.  This is really a shout out to all cleaning supplies.  Yes, your dorm will get messy and will not always look like the picture below.  Eventually a drink or trash can will get spilled, so it’s better to be prepared in advance and have some cleaning supplies handy.  Sweeping your room regularly is ESSENTIAL. Your roommate and friends will cherish you for it.Made with Repix (http://repix.it)

5.  Medicine cabinet.  No, you don’t need an actual cabinet, but having medicine on hand will really benefit you later on.  Medicine for headaches, colds, stomach pain, indigestion, ANYTHING– it will come in handy when you simply don’t have time to make it to the store and you have a raging headache before class.  Mom won’t be there anymore to dish out the meds.. but ask your parents for advice on what to take when you do get sick!

There are a lot of essentials to bring to college, but these are some items that I think a lot of people tend to forget about.  You can’t call Dad to come jump your car off or ask mom to bring you medicine when you’re off at college, so take initiative and get prepared!  I have to say, it’s actually fun to learn to be more independent, I hope you will think so too!
